Erroyl Bing of East Carolina
was named the Conference USA Player of the Week for period ending Feb. 22,
the league office announced on Monday.
Bing played pivotal roles in
vital home wins by the Pirates last week over Tulane and Texas Christian. He
averaged a double-double of 15.0 points and 12.0 rebounds in the two games.
The victories kept the Pirates
in the thick of the scramble for one of the 12 berths in the 14-team
league's postseason tournament.
The senior forward from Largo,
FL, opened the week on Tuesday, Feb. 18, against the Green Wave with 12
points and 11 rebounds in ECU's 76-66 victory. He followed that performance
with an 18-point, 15-rebound outing versus the Horned Frogs on Saturday,
Feb. 21.
Bing's 15 rebounds against TCU
were a season-high. His pair of double-doubles were his fifth and sixth of
the season and the 24th and 25th of his career, third most among active
players.
Bing is just the second player
to earn the weekly honor since ECU joined Conference USA in 2001-02. Senior
Gabriel Mikulas, who was lost last month for the remainder of the season
with a broken arm, earned the award once last season.
West
named Tennessee coach of the year
Tommy West, who guided his
University of Memphis football team to a victory in the 2003 New Orleans
Bowl, has been named the Coach of the Year by the Tennessee Sportswriters
Association.
As head coach at Memphis, West
has generated a new enthusiasm and excitement for the Tigers football
program. He led the 2003 squad to an 9-4 record, including a 27-17 victory
over North Texas University in the New Orleans Bowl.
The postseason outing was the
U of M's first bowl appearance in 32 years and the team's nine victories
during the 2003 season were the most by a Tiger squad since the 1963 season.
Memphis placed nine players on
the All-Conference USA team and one on the All-Freshman squad.
